I don’t know how you approach any new purchase, car or otherwise, but I first start by hitting websites and YouTube and look for that 360 degree view.
If you look at reviews of movies as a guide, each person shows some level of bias, and some like to be that first person to rush out the first bad review, the first to pick it apart. Perhaps it is just crap, but maybe, it’s the reviewer who’s become jaded with time.
I figure there must be some element of this with those who review cars too, reviewing so many perhaps they can’t appreciate a car for what it does offer and maybe set expectations too high. Having watched a number of reviews on car sites and YouTube, I would say some reviewers fell into this bucket and I weighted their reviews accordingly.
The technical jargon
Most will cite technical data like Newton meters in their reviews, for the life of me I had no idea how to interpret what it meant. Equally, they’d all share data on each car’s energy use, I would have liked perhaps a graph or some better way to understand the value they were sharing as it makes interpreting easier.
Another area that I’d love more understanding on is regenerative braking. For the car i’ve selected, the Hyundai Elexio Elite, little info is shared on this feature though reviewers seem to suggest preferring the sports mode. None of the reviewers though outlined during their reviews how it worked in any detail; frustrating.
Favoured reviewers
I had several sites and YouTube reviewers I favoured when researching cars, here’s my list:
Websites
YouTube
- Drive
- The Electric Viking
- The Right Car – good reviewer
- Electrify This – also has tips
- Ludicrous Feed – has done in-depth reviews that are great
