What will savings be?

Last year I needed to move across country to look after family members after both my father and step-mother suffered health issues within months of one another; I’m still living with them fourteen months on.

Whilst I await selling my home back in Perth, co-owned with another, I will need to rely upon public charging infrastructure once my EV arrives, like the nearby Tesla supercharger.

Thankfully, if you sign-up as a member on the Tesla app paying a monthly fee, currently $9.99, as a non-a Tesla owner you’re able to access around 80 of their existing sites opened to other users at a reduced rate price.

I am curious what the savings may be with my using public charging versus were I able to use at home charging on an energy plan. I’m sure given current fuel prices there’s little doubt I’ll save when compared to $3/L for diesel and higher. As I don’t know anyone nearby with an EV, nor anyone in the same situation as myself it’s hard to understand what the likely outcome may be.

Update — using Gemini to calculate possibilities

I decided to throw Gemini a prompt this morning and research a comparison of possible costs for my current diesel BMW X1 and soon to be delivered Hyundai Elexio Elite EV were each car to travel both 500kms and 2,000kms. For premium diesel I’m assuming today’s pump price is $3/L, for the EV I’m looking at Tesla superchargers at member rates and costs were I charging at home. Here’s what Gemini suggested costs may be based upon distances specified, of course may not reflect actual incurred:

  • BMW X1
    • 500km — $76.50
    • 2,000km — $306.00
  • Hyundai Elexio Elite
    • 500km — $46.41 (Tesla) $29.12 (Home)
    • 2,000km — $185.64 (Tesla) $116.48 (Home)

Even on Tesla charging there’s a $30 saving over diesel, but if charging at home that extends to $47 saving. Obviously these differences are at current inflated bowser rates and would shrink once normalised, but it’s interesting to at least see possible differences, though actual will certainly be of great interest.
