Prior to making the decision to go EV in April, I had actually considered strongly doing so from late 2025.
After I’d finished work for the year, I was driving in my BMW X1 to Canberra from where I live in Wagga Wagga, about 3 hours drive when you factor in stopping for a break. The drive there that day was an eventful one, as I neared the turn from the Hume Hwy to hear towards Canberra I noticed a fire ahead of me with thick smoke, and it was in the middle of the highway.
It ended up being a truck burning furiously in the median strip—the one day I also had my windows down as I drove past; I later discovered it was lithium ion batteries on fire.
Several hours later, I’d finished shopping in Canberra and was on my way home and again nearing the same intersection where the truck had been on fire, a man was here diverting people preventing us from taking the turn southward, the truck fire had caused the highway to be closed by authorities and would remain so until the following morning.
I ended up going north that day to Goulburn and booked accommodation to stay overnight, not being from here I didn’t have a clue how to get home now and my phone’s maps decided to fail when I pulled into a stop leaving me distinctly lacking. This ended up being the catalyst for wanting a newer car with much better mapping as relying on the tiny iPhone screen and an older GPS nav system in my 2017 BMW just left me frustrated and lost for options that day.
Sadly, my recent accident means I’m back to relying upon this same tech later this week as I drive to the Tullamarine region for the first time. Though I’ve flown here a few times before, I have never driven and couldn’t find my way to save myself. I loathe the thought of the small nav screen once more, the large screen in the Elexio has been so welcomed these past six months.
